Happy Lancashire Day to all our Fellow Lancastrians and Lancashire Cheese Lovers.
Known as the Red Rose County, today marks the day when Lancashire first sent representatives to parliament back in 1295.
With an illustrious history, Lancashire can claim many firsts: the first stretch of motorway to open in Britain was in Preston, Blackburn was the first town in the UK to take on mass fingerprinting and Garstang was the world’s first Fairtrade Town.
And with its lush pasture and rolling green hills, Lancashire is also the perfect county for dairy farming and Cheesemaking.
Made to a traditional two-day recipe, Creamy and Tasty Lancashire Cheese was traditionally made on small dairy farms by the farmer’s wife before selling at local markets.
It was in the late 1800s and early 1900s; farmer and cheese instructor Joseph Gornall was commissioned by Lancashire Council to visit Lancashire farms and educate them on cheesemaking to create a consistent Lancashire Cheese, and so was born the Traditional Lancashire Cheese.
Using the same methods and continuing to make Lancashire Cheese to a two-day curd, Dewlay Cheesemakers is the only cheesemaker in Lancashire to make Beacon Fell Traditional Lancashire Cheese, a cheese that is protected under UK and EU legislation, ensuring only Lancashire milk can be used to make this traditional cheese.
Including Crumbly Lancashire too, Dewlay makes Creamy, Crumbly and Tasty Lancashire Cheese, all of which is available in our cheese shop or can be bought as part of one of our special hampers: DewlayLancashire Box – Dewlay
