Dew Lays’s creamy Lancashire and Garstang Blue cheeses win categories in NW Fine Food Awards 2007
Dew Lay based at Kirkland Garstang which produces traditional Lancashire cheese has been voted the best Lancashire cheese and Blue cheese at the NW Fine Food Awards 2007. The company is now waiting with baited breath to find out if it is the overall category winner or North West Producer of the Year to be announced in March.
Dew Lay fought off tough competition from some of the North West’s finest food as they went head to head with the region’s cream of the crop. Categories included a variety of delicacies from cheeses and chutneys to beer and bangers.
This year saw a record high number of entries with more than 500 submissions which were judged by a panel of famous foodie faces including North West top chefs Nigel Howarth and Paul Askew; national and regional food critics; supermarket representatives and regional tourist groups.
Sue Nelson, Chief Executive of NW Fine Food, said, “The North West Fine Food Awards celebrate the very best foods produced in the North West and recognise just how fantastic locally produced food and drink really is.
“The standard of entries in the competition gets higher every year and being a winner is a massive achievement. Thank you to everyone who entered and the general public who got behind their local entries so well.”
Dew Lay sales manager Ian Coggin said, “this is great news for every one at the dairy and the local farmers supplying our milk as we celebrate our 50th year of Lancashire cheese making at Garstang”
The NW Fine Food Awards 2007 are supported by the Fantastic Food Partnership, including Made in Cheshire, Made in Cumbria, Made in Lancashire and Local Food First Merseyside and Manchester.
Now in their 6th year, the NW Fine Food Award is the only scheme that covers the whole of the North West. 10 overall category winners, the North West Producer of the Year and Most Innovative New Product will be announced during a star studied gala dinner being held at The Lowry Hotel on 22 March.
